My First Day with Dandy
Hi, my name is Hannah and I am 8 years old. I live out in the country with my brothers and sister. Today is a really special day because I get to take care of a horse all summer. His name is Dandy. We have some friends who are going to a horse show and they asked me if I wanted to take care of him while they were gone. And I said, “Sure.” Two days ago we went to meet Dandy and I got to ride him and learn how he rides. We learned how to feed him and how to put the saddle and bridle on him. It was really hard for me to wait for him to get here. This morning I asked my mom, “Is he here?” and she said, “Not yet.” Finally he got here. I’ve been walking him around and I’ve had a really great time. We went to town to get him a feed bowl and some feed. We got him oats, Strategy, and some wheat bran. Dandy is 27 years old and he is on a very strict diet. So we have to watch how much we feed him. Dandy can only hold a certain amount of weight when we ride him, so only one person can ride him at a time. I’m glad my parents think I am responsible enough to take care of a real horse. Tomorrow I will get to ride him and that is very exciting.
